Keep Oppo Italian!

I got to play in concert as his opener (as part of a youth symphony orchestra) when I was in high school. Afterward, we were allowed backstage where he signed autographs. The stage manager was trying to keep us away from him, but he told the guy to chill out and let us in. I still have his autograph. Fantastic artist and cool guy.

Trombone. Symphonic, jazz, and marching. Up through college. My daughter started band this year and didn’t want anything to do with my horn; she was all about flute. So, I got us both flutes, and we’ve been learning together. We have a pact to practice together every evening.

I play trumpet professionally. My son has taken up the cornet/trumpet, but I try not to teach him. It usually doesn’t go very well. I try to keep an ear out and give pointers where I can. That’s cool you took up the flute to play with her. Where did you go to college? It sounds like you didn’t follow music as a career.

That’s fantastic! What kind of gig do you have?

I went to Cornell, for Chemistry, not Music. Still, I was all in for a long time, although strictly with amateur ambitions. Funny, all the music majors I knew transferred over from Engineering. Once I got to grad school, life got busier, and I stopped playing. I kinda regret that, but life changes, although music never really leaves you.

It’s been great learning a completely different instrument with my daughter. On the one hand, she really loves playing with me, but on the other, she doesn’t want me to be the teacher or get too far ahead of her. So we just play together, and I let her run the show. But, every once in a while, I suggest a little tip to help get her over a difficult bit, and she’ll take it because it makes the duet sound better. So in my sneaky way, she’s learning about pushing from the diaphragm and controlling the airstream, and a bit more about reading music (the band teacher doesn’t have time for the kids individually in class, after all). Another thing that’s changed from when I was studying is the Internet. We took a free starter course of video lessons I found online. Did you know the are teachers offering individual lessons over Skype?
